Can You Help Us Please?

Dear Excellency:

If a man from your country visited the United States and had a child with an American woman, would that man abandon his child?  Would he force the United States to support his child financially? Would he help the mother care for the child?  Would your government recognize a marriage between the citizen of your country and a citizen of the United States?  Would your government help the child, or would it ignore the child?  Most important, would you let an American man abandon a woman of your country and his child if you had the power to prosecute him?

Please allow me to thank you for taking time to read my letter.  Also, please review the following websites before you read this letter:

As an American citizen, I love my country; however, sometimes my government needs to be reminded that the administration of justice is an international affair – especially when poor children and their custodial parents are involved.  The peace-loving Nobel Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated it best when he said:  “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

The reason that I contacted you is because your country is an honored member of The Hague Conference of Private International Law.  Among this distinguished group of nations, some are in agreement with one or more of the following Hague Conventions:

Even if your country does not agree with the conventions mentioned above, your country’s willingness to participate as a privileged member of a group of civilized nations that believe in the internationalization of basic human rights is highly gratifying.

I am the mother of Tara A. Uzamere, a 27-year-old college student.  She is a very motivated, obedient and well-read child.  However, like me, she is poor.  My daughter’s father and my husband, Senator Ehigie Edobor Uzamere, is a millionaire in Nigeria.  When Ehigie was a young man in the United States, he was tutored by a dishonest attorney named Harvey Shapiro into finding a naïve American girl and using a fictitious name to marry said girl in order to obtain permanent residence in the United States.  That naïve American girl was me.

Immediately after I signed the sponsorship papers, Senator Uzamere left me pregnant and without money for myself and our child.  Because he used the fictitious first name “Godwin” and the fictitious social security number 099-20-2291, I was never able to obtain spousal support or child support for our daughter for her entire life.  Sometime after 2003, Senator Uzamere and his brother George help Tara financially or three occasions; however, Senator Uzamere has never consistently provided either me or his daughter with finances.  When Tara underwent an operation last year, she had to take care of the bill on her own.  I did not have the money to help her, and Senator Uzamere and his family, for the most part, treat her like a pariah.

Around October 1, 2003, Senator Uzamere retained the services of Jack Gladstein, Esq.  Senator Uzamere and Mr. Gladstein devised a scheme whereby they would attempt to elicit my cooperation to divorce Senator Uzamere using the same fictitious name with which he married me.  When I refused, Senator Uzamere again vanished, and Mr. Gladstein, after I sent a letter of complaint to the Grievance Committee at 335 Adams Street in Brooklyn, decided not to represent my husband.

Over the past few years, I have sent letters to the Honorable Mallam Ibrahim Awalu, Consul General of Nigeria, requesting my husband’s public address so that I could divorce him.  I received a letter from his assistant N.M. Ajanwachuku, claiming that he sent said letter to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since the consulate did not have the address for Senator Uzamere or the Nigerian Senate.

It is dangerous to allow foreign men to visit your country who do not obey the laws in their own countries.  It is dangerous to allow foreign men to visit your country if they have uncontrolled sexual habits that result in the predation of helpless women with whom these immoral foreign men have children. It is dangerous to allow foreign men to visit your country who physically and emotionally abandoned their children.  It is dangerous when the foreign man’s country does nothing to encourage its citizens to accept responsibility for their wives and children abroad.  It is worse when a foreign country lacks the common decency to encourage its citizens to care for their marital and child support responsibilities in the foreign country where they lived.

It appears that in spite of President Yar’Adua’s good intentions, many of Nigeria’s citizens, including members of its government are determined to incorporate dishonesty in their lives.  It is no surprise that a song like Oyinbo man, I’m going to chop your dollar and the 419 e-mails that Nigerians send to many people in the West are so popular in Nigeria.

Citizens from countries who do not observe the rule of law – especially regarding the care of their own children should be monitored so that they do not victimize the citizens of other countries.  Even if a country is not a member of The Hague, there are certain laws and basic morals that are internationally recognized.  Caring for one’s child should be of prime importance.  A person who comes from a country that does not protect its infant citizens should be shunned.

I do not know what else to do.  I am poor; I am disabled, I have a hard-working daughter who is in college and is also poor.  I have begged various municipal, state and federal agencies to help report Senator Uzamere’s crimes against me and our daughter.  No one will assist me.

America has a wonderful justice system, but sometimes it can be difficult to receive justice if you are black and poor.

Can you please help me and my daughter overcome this great injustice that was forced on us by Senator Uzamere and the Nigerian government?

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

                              Respectfully,

                Cheryl D. Uzamere
